Riverhead

Welcome to… Riverhead.town

Riverhead is a town in Suffolk County, New York, on the northern shore of Long Island. Riverhead was established in 1792 immediately after the American Revolution as efforts were being made to develop a new jurisdiction of expansionism. The land was divided from the town of Southold in 1742 which had been purchased in 1649 from the Lenape tribe and the second portion was purchased from Colonel William in 1742. It was originally named River Head because of its location that is on the mouth of the Peconic River. The town is located 166 miles southwest of Boston, and 76 miles northeast of New York. Most importantly 20,000 of the 35,000 acres farmland of Island is located inside the town, therefore it is the main economic center of New York. The town has five beaches (Iron Pier Beach, Wading River, Reeves Beach, Beach River and South Jamesport Beach) that are open year-round. These beaches offer plenty of entertainment to their residents and their visitors.
