History

The first Europeans arrived here in 1659 when John Tucker and Joseph Horton, from Southold, got the right to plant a sawmill here. In the late 1690s, grist and fulling mills were established to take advantage of the power of water on the banks of the Peconic River. In the start of eighteenth century, Riverhead spawned many industries including Cordwood, shipbuilding, textiles and many other. In 1727 constructions of jail and courts are started here but still this area is not established as a residential area. The Town of Riverhead was established in March 13, 1792, on the west side of the town of Southold, the ninth city of the ten cities of Suffolk. Now Riverhead hamlet is also called Suffolk County Court House.
